Best of 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs has been hosting the "Best of" linky party since 2015.  I have participated in the party each year and it is always interesting to take a look at what some of the stats reveal... and what my personal feelings are in regard to those stats.  I am sometimes usually at little surprised at what posts/stories appear (by the numbers) to be the most popular (and this year is no surprise)... And then there's my personal favorites.

By the numbers:

Several older posts (I mean years old) made the list.  I'm not quite ...

Camping Journal Quilt ~ Sew & Tell - 12/16/2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

It's D.O.N.E!  The Camping Journal Quilt (top) is done.  As I shared on fb and instagram...

This quilt has been a labor of love for years and documents each and every camping adventure we have been on.

It tells the stories with one block for each night's stay at a location.  It includes small things and big things... when we saw a bear or deer or bighorn sheep or a tarantula...our transition from our truck camper to the 5th wheel camper... as well as the loss of an awning and our beloved Shelby.

I ...

Vintage Linen Finds New Life from Melva Loves Scraps

As my Mom continues to downsize, I continue to receive items that are "just too good to go to a thrift store."

Besides the postcard collection that I am still sifting through, I have been given a few tobacco cans (these will soon be listed on ebay), wooden spools (these found a new home quickly, just in time for Valentines Day) and antique and vintage children's blocks.  I was also handed a vintage linen piece that Tressie (from the Pieces in the Garden sew along) made.

I loved the color and the simple design and knew immediately that I ...

Best of 2023 & Year-end Review, 2024 Planning Party from Melva Loves Scraps

As the year draws to a close, I wanted to review the highlights and progress of the year.  G
oals that I had for 2023 were:

❤  Make "quilted hearts" and spread a trail of love as we travel and camp. To date, 58 hearts have been released into the world.  Sadly, none of them have been "reported".  My husband said, "it's because you leave them in up on mountains, hilltops and remote trails."  LOL!  Well, perhaps there is that.

❤  While it wasn't an official goal, but a challenge I stumbled upon while perusing through Instagram, I enjoyed the ...

May's Favorite Finish & June's OMG from Melva Loves Scraps

The quilt that was my favorite finish for the month of May was the Ribbon & Lace quilt that was pieced by Mary Margaret Smith in 1985.  I was trusted with the privilege and honor to finish the fancy sampler quilt by Mary's daughter.  You can see more details about it here and here...

Oh. My. Goodness!  How is that the calendar has turned to the sixth (6th!) month? We keep a fairly low-key schedule with a few trips planned here and there, but... WOW!  June is going to have us hopping.

Activities are planned and on the calendar, and ...

November One Month Goal & Favorite Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

November seems to have slowed just a bit for me... perhaps it was the fact that I was recovering from shingles and then caught a chest cold.

Despite less than perfect health, I did meet November's One Month Goal of quilting and finishing my Pieces in the Garden Row Quilt.  Woot, woot!

Since this quilt is based on the story of a "Bride's Quilt" I would use the small chapel/storage shed that is down the road from our house for the backdrop.

I chose 5" clamshells as the quilting design... a little larger than traditional, but it ...

Hanna's First Year - Friday Finished Top from Melva Loves Scraps

I have a Friday Finish... um, of sorts.  I have Hanna's First Year Quilt all together and with borders!

I have sandwiching, quilting and binding to do for it to be fully finished, but this week, at this time, at this place... I believe in celebrating baby steps, or phases/stages.

I have a couple other projects I need to turn my focus to over the weekend..  like a little squirrel project that popped up.

We have been doing a few small projects in the camper as we continue to make it "our own."  Since we turned the mattress ...

July Favorite Finish - Cake Walk Quilt from Melva Loves Scraps

As I looked back over the past month... where did it go, by the way?  I can see I spent a great deal of time in my studio...

But the favorite finish of the month was the Cake Walk Quilt... it is my customer's quilt featuring Dresden Plate bocks and a few Sun Bonnet Sue blocks that appear to be "walking around the edge of the quilt".

I struggled with a quilting design idea and went back and forth about several options, but finally settled on "connecting the dots" as one reader suggested.

I stitched in some flowers that ...

Clowning Around from Sew Sunshine

"Clowning Around"
Zen Medallion pattern by Latifah Saafir
50" x50"

So much bias tape on this quilt. I enjoyed making it and sewing it on but when I went to sew the wedges together I had a hard time getting the bias tape to match in width. Because I made the bias with various fabrics some pressed better than others. I do recommend the AGF's because their hand is so smooth and presses beautifully but if you use the light prints you might get see through seams. The pressing really needs to go whichever way is the flattest.
I ...

Weekly update: an unexpected gift, stash report, OMG finished and planned -- and reading from With Strings Attached

The 2021 ALA Midwinter Meeting was held virtually from January 22-26.  FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden was the closing speaker on the 25th.  She was so vibrant!   The remarkable young poet Amanda Gorman appeared in a clip just prior to Dr. Biden's talk.

Just a year ago I'd heard of Zoom but I'd only attended one meeting.  It does it much easier to convene groups of people who live both nearby and far away.  A perfect example:  on Saturday morning AAUW-Michigan convened a regional meeting with participants from 18 states. There was lots of good information and idea-sharing ...
